The objective of this project was to develop an on-farm inspection tool to assess the probability of exposure of pigs with outdoor access to Trichinella.
This tool supported implementation of Annex 4 of EU regulation 2075/2005, according to which a pig holding with outdoor access can be recognized as a holding with controlled housing conditions when the results of a risk assessment show that the outdoor conditions do not pose a danger for introduction of Trichinella in the holding. In a first step, relevant Trichinella risk factors were determined through literature review. In a second step, the tool was developed building up on existing on-farm assessment tools and stakeholder consultation. Finally, the tool was evaluated for ease of use on a number of pig farms.
SAFOSO contributed to this project in collaboration with the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), which was funded by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
