SAFOSO contributed to a large EU-funded project having two main components.

In a first component, SAFOSO contributed significantly to efforts to document freedom from FMD with vaccination in the Turkish region of Thrace. SAFOSO reviewed available documentation and provided recommendations for further improvements. The output of these activities was a report submitted to the OIE in 2010 for the application by Turkey to recognize Thrace as a region free from FMD with vaccination.

In a second component, SAFOSO established training materials and conducted a first training on FMD prevention and control measures. Further trainings were conducted independently by Turkish experts using SAFOSO training materials.
