Project background
In 2021 the Republic of Moldova applied to be added on the list of third countries from which imports of dairy products into the EU are authorized. It is thus important that both the public sector and the private sector in Moldova take preparatory measures to ensure that they comply with the relevant requirements of the EU. To assist the country and its dairy sector in accessing EU markets, IFC has developed an EU export readiness support program (ERP) for selected dairy processors. This program supports Moldovan dairy processors in achieving EU compliance regarding the export of dairy products.
Our work
SAFOSO conducted to missions to Moldova. During the first mission, 5 dairy processing companies were visited and assessed for compliance with the EU food safety requirements. Individual action plans with a detailed assessment and existing gaps were prepared for each of the companies. A second mission to Moldova was conducted to provide training for dairy processors and staff of the National Food Safety Authority. The training included presentations on EU export requirements for dairy processing companies and producers. Field trips to selected processors and farms were organized to demonstrate an on-site assessment compliance with EU regulations.
Results
Both the Moldovan authorities and dairy processors gained an improved understanding of the requirements and prerequisites for the export of milk and dairy products to the EU. With the individual action plans provided, the dairy processors received a guidance document on how to fill the gaps to achieve full compliance with EU export requirements.
